How to wash your hands properly – The Body Shop

Did you know that when you come into contact with thousands of surfaces from your mobile phone to shared yoga mats, this can lead to a build-up of germs on your hands. That’s why washing your hands regularly is such an important part of keeping yourself and those around you healthy.

Another culprit is touching your face – which on average we do 200 times a day. This is because germs can enter into our system which could cause us to become unwell.

While a quick rinse with soap and water could sound like the right solution, in fact it is recommended that you wash your hands thoroughly for twenty seconds to try to reduce the amount of germs or bacteria from your hands.

Not sure what to do for 20 seconds? It’s not as long as you may think! Simply follow along with our 10 steps for washing your hands the right way:

1. First, wet your hands with warm water

2. Apply 1-2 pumps of soap to cover your hands. Be generous!

3. Lather up by rubbing the palms of your hands together

4. Use the palm of one hand to rub the back of the other and clean in between the fingers. Repeat on the other hand

5. Rub your hands together making sure you clean in between your fingers

6. Rub the back of your fingers against your palms on both hand

7. Don’t forget your thumbs! Rub each one using your other hand

8. Rub the tips of your fingers on the palm of your other hand

9. Rinse your hands with running water

10. Dry your hands completely with a clean towel and – handy tip! - use it to turn off the tap.
