Albania’s Vjosa River is the largest wild river in Europe. From the mountains of Greece to the Adriatic Sea in Albania, it spans 300 kilometers, completely free of artificial barriers, like hydropower dams. The rivers and streams that are tributaries of the Vjosa are home to more than 1,100 wildlife species, many of which are threatened.

The Vjosa is the crown of the #BlueHeartofEurope and people across Albania want to protect it forever. They are asking to government of Albania to create #VjosaNationalParkNow, which would be the very first wild river park in Europe.

Let’s stand with them. Click the link in bio to watch the film and sign the petition.

From @Mongabay: Only 4% of the jaguar’s critical habitat is effectively protected across the Americas, and in Brazil’s Cerrado biome it’s just 2%. A survey in Emas National Park in the Cerrado biome concludes that the protected area isn’t large enough to sustain a viable jaguar population, and that jaguars moving in and out could be exposed to substantial extinction risk in the future. The study suggests that improving net immigration may be more important than increasing population sizes in small isolated populations, including by creating dispersal corridors. To ensure the corridors’ effectiveness, conservation efforts should focus on resolving the conflict between the jaguars and human communities.

After a 70-year absence, Jaguars once again roam free in the Iberá Wetlands of Argentina.

Congratulations to the government of Argentina, Argentina’s National Parks, the Province of Corrientes, Fundación Rewilding Argentina and Tompkins Conservation for their commitment to rewilding this iconic species, and the local communities of Iberá and all the people of Corrientes who have supported this unprecedented effort and who welcome the return of the Jaguar! I have been supporting Tompkins Conservation, including on their exciting Jaguar rewilding efforts, for many years.

With the release of the female jaguar Mariua and her two cubs born at the Jaguar Reintroduction Center, Karai and Pora, Argentina has taken an important step to restore this top predator to Gran Iberá Park, a 1.7-million-acre wilderness protected area, and to securing the future for the Jaguar in Argentina, where the species is Critically Endangered with fewer than 200 left.

The return of the Jaguar will also help restore full ecosystem health to Iberá, much as the return of the wolves did to Yellowstone in the United States. Argentina is embracing this important strategy of rewilding as a tool to combat the extinction crisis and move toward a healthier, wilder and more equitable planet.

Rangers protect 30% of the planet. They are critical to helping us reverse the twin crises of climate change and species extinction.

Renowned photographers are offering unique prints in support of wildlife rangers in the new #ArtForRangers online sale hosted by @global_wildlife_conservation, @naturalstate_org and @tusk_org on Artsy.

The pandemic has been devastating for rangers in Africa. Their salaries have drastically been cut, many of them have been furloughed, leaving wildlife and local communities vulnerable and unprotected.  Two dozen leading photographers are now stepping up to help by offering their incredible images to support ranger teams in Africa that have been most severely hit by the economic impacts of COVID-19.

100% of proceeds will be contributed to the Ranger Fund administered by @tusk_org to support rangers on the ground, providing a lifeline to their communities as well as iconic wildlife. All print sales will be matched by the Scheinberg Relief Fund to double your generous contribution.

To see more photos and make a purchase, visit: artsy.net/globalwildlife/rangers (link in bio)

Photos from the sale by: @beverlyjoubert @amivitale @davidyarrow @brentstirton, @robindmoore @greg.dutoit @paulnicklen @shannon_wild @martinbuzora @Sandesh_kadur

Found: The Voeltzkow’s Chameleon was believed to have been lost to science since Woodrow Wilson was president (1913)...but no longer. An expedition team led by Frank Glaw at Zoologische Staatssammlung München rediscovered the lost species during a challenging two-week expedition in northwestern #Madagascar. The females, they found, are especially colorful, with striking patterns of purple, orange, red, green, black and white - and they change color depending on their mood. This is the sixth of @global_wildlife_conservation’s 25 most wanted lost species that has now been found.
