From @mongabay: The Brazilian Amazon is now a net CO2 source, study: The Brazilian Amazon has been transformed from a carbon dioxide sink to a source for new emissions over the past two decades, a new study shows. While the Amazon as a whole, which straddles nine countries, has absorbed about 1.7 billion metric tons of CO2 equivalent more than it has emitted in the past 20 years, the Brazilian portion alone has emitted a net 3.6 billion metric tons during that period. This study by the Monitoring of the Andean Amazon Project (MAAP) is unique because it was able to go deeper in analyzing changes in forest emissions from different parts of the rainforest compared to previous research, says author Matt Finer. Satellite monitoring data show that formally protected areas and lands controlled by Indigenous peoples hold the best hope for preserving the Amazon and its function as a bulwark against climate change. The Mexican government has lifted the ban on fishing in the Vaquita’s habitat. The Vaquita porpoise, also known as the “panda of the sea,” is the most endangered marine mammal in the world. The government’s decision effectively ensures that the remaining 10 or so porpoises will die in gillnets. How can you help? From @oceana: The U.S. Senate passed the Shark Fin Sales Elimination Act (S. 1106) — a bill that would ban the buying and selling of shark fins in the United States — as part of a broader legislative package known as the United States Innovation and Competition Act (S. 1260). This brings us one step closer to removing the U.S. from the shark fin trade. Global oceanic shark and ray populations have declined by more than 70% over the last 50 years, with overfishing as the primary cause, according to a study published in Nature earlier this year. The demand for shark fins incentivizes overfishing and shark finning. We now turn our attention to the U.S. House of Representatives. From @TheWCS: Vehicle collisions are a growing threat to primates living in increasingly fragmented habitats crisscrossed by roads. Now, new research shows speedbumps can protect one of Africas rarest primates. Endangered Zanzibar red colobus are found only in the Zanzibar archipelago. Reliant on Unguja Island’s forests for their survival, around half of the population is found in Jozani-Chwaka Bay National Park. Historic data from there showed that one colobus was killed on average every 2-3 weeks by traffic. After speedbumps were installed, that was cut to one every six weeks, says new research co-authored by @thewcs.
