From @NowThisNews: An iceberg approximately the size of Los Angeles broke off of Antarctica on February 26, according to the British Antarctic Survey. The 490-square-mile iceberg detached 10 days after a large crack was filmed in the ice. The rift, which formed earlier this year, ‘pushed northeast at up to 1 km per day’ until it eventually broke off into an iceberg. Director of BAS Professor Dame Jane Francis said, ‘our teams at BAS have been prepared for the calving of an iceberg from Brunt Ice Shelf for years. We monitor the ice shelf daily using an automated network of high-precision GPS instruments that surround the station. These measure how the ice shelf is deforming and moving.’
