Today, we take you through intricate details of the inspiration behind our #NEW #GiftingCollection — #KampaniKalam. After the East India Company settled in India, its employees wanted to capture the country’s vivid culture via a medium that was simple yet significant. This led to the emergence of Kampani Kalam style of painting — a synthetic style that imitated the English style of #paintings, for which schools were set up across Bombay, Calcutta and Madras in order to train the Indian artists. The idea was to capture a combination of traditional elements from Rajput and Mughal paintings to blend with Western treatment. Whilst the water colour technique was already prevalent in India, “transparency of texture, soft tones and modelling in broad strokes” were borrowed from west. The subject of the paintings could be anything from Indian People, dancers, fairs and festivals to landscapes and monuments, a glimpse of which is captured in our collection.
