The latest @UNClimateChange report shows that national climate plans - or NDCs - submitted to the UN so far do not put us on a path to meet the #ParisAgreement goals. But how do these climate plans work? And why is 2021 such a crucial year for the fight against the #ClimateEmergency?
Part of the answer is 5-year cycle of the Paris Agreement. After its adoption in 2015, countries agreed that parties must submit new and increasingly ambitious climate plans every 5 years. After delays caused by the #COVID19 pandemic in 2020, countries are asked to submit their new climate plans this year - before the crucial climate conference #COP26 in November.
However, many things have changed since 2015. New scientific analysis by the IPCC has shown that we must act even faster to keep the Paris Agreement goals within reach. That is why this year is so important: Countries are submitting their climate plans for the next years.
The new report shows: We are not there yet. We need more countries - especially big emitters - to submit their plans and we need these plans to be very ambitious. We still have time to act, but we need to act now. #ItsPossible
